WATERPROOF YOUR LEATHER
Leather is a hard-wearing material that can last for many years if properly cared for and maintained. Regular care is essential to preserve its colour, suppleness and resistance to everyday wear. micare balm lets you waterproof your leather products, preventing liquids from penetrating the leather and causing damage. It also prevents the leather from drying out and losing its natural beauty.
The balm softens and becomes easier to work with when warm, so we recommend using and storing it at a room temperature of 20–25°C.
How we recommend waterproofing your leather:
It is extremely important to apply micare balm in an ultra-thin layer. Think of a flower that NEEDS water: without any, it dries out; with too much, it drowns. Leather can likewise be overtreated. That is why it is important to work with the balm at room temperature and only apply as much as the leather can absorb and needs.
Before you start, have the following ready:
micare balm, and micare care soap if cleaning is needed.
- Before you start, make sure the item you want to treat is clean and dry.
- You can clean the leather with micare care soap, which is also the soap we recommend for leather care. The moisture from the soap nourishes the leather. Wait just under an hour, then apply balm.
- As the colour may deepen, we recommend testing on an inconspicuous area.
- Rub the clean, dry sponge over the balm in the tub a couple of times and wipe off any excess on the edge.
- Then massage the balm into the item using circular movements. Use too little rather than too much balm. NOTE: There must NOT be a layer of balm left on the surface; it must be massaged in immediately.
- The balm also retains moisture in the leather, so if your leather is extremely dry, it helps to clean and care for it with care soap before applying balm. When you have finished, the furniture is ready to use.
In general, leather furniture benefits from treatment twice a year. In special cases where items are exposed to draughts, direct sunlight or very high temperatures, an extra treatment may be needed.
Use the treatment on leather items such as:
Chairs, sofas, leather car seats, pouffes, daybeds, coasters, leather shoes and boots, oilskin jackets, wallets, bags, leather-bound books, saddles, bridles, riding boots, hunting boots, football boots, trainers, leather trousers, leather jackets, etc.
micare balm is not suitable for suede or Alcantara. It can be used on some types of nubuck with a very finely buffed surface that resembles smooth leather, or on extremely dry items. We recommend ALWAYS testing on an inconspicuous area.
Please NOTE that the balm can turn buffed nubuck into smooth leather.
